Laid back, relaxed, calm, and beautiful views. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It never took us longer than five minutes to catch a ride with someone. Hitch a ride down at the main road if you don't have a car. Raglan itself is a nice little town for wandering around and getting food. They were happy to let us hitch rides into town when they were going in and to give us all the advice we needed. The staff were all super helpful and friendly. Solscape is super green and creative with chickens kept there so you can buy fresh eggs, recycling bins and composting. It had its own kitchen and bathroom, which was really nice. It was incredibly comfortable, decorated nicely, and quiet. We stayed in the sleeper car - the largest of the train car rooms. It's a very short walk down to go surfing and you can rent all the surf equipment you need from the main office. First of all, the view is unbelievable looking from the top of the hill out over the ocean. For people who want to relax, get away from it all, but need a small town very close by for a night or two out. for people who want to surf or chill on the beach (15mins walk and you can rent boards at Solscapes). I recommend Solscapes for those people that enjoy yoga (run every other morning). You can even stay and learn about setting up self sufficient food growing practices. There is a vegetarian restaurant and a lot of the food is grown on the property. The people that run Solscapes run it as a NZ YHA with a difference. All the same, the combination of recycled carriages as bedrooms, a communal kitchen, a shared BBQ and other characterful landscaping makes this place a great place to stay. How they got here up a steep slope still intrigues me. The back-packer style accomodation wing is made up of several converted old railway carriages. There is a field for tents (non-powered sites). Not only that, the property is made up of some very unusual and cool accomodation. Up on a hillside the property commands some lovely views. It's about 4kms outside of Raglan town but about 15mins walk from the world famous point break. My girlfriend and I stayed in this unique place in Jan 2013.
